Graziano and Getrag: Identify the Transmission Before Repair
The manufacturer name is only the beginning
Graziano and Getrag identify transmission manufacturers, not one universal gearbox or actuator. Determine the exact unit, vehicle application and installed control system before selecting service parts. Similar terminology does not establish interchangeability.
Separate the gearbox from its controls
A gearbox, a clutch assembly and an actuator or hydraulic control unit perform different functions. A shift complaint can involve more than one of these systems. Diagnosis should establish what needs attention rather than treating every fault as an actuator failure.
Road-car F1 terminology
Ferrari's use of 'F1' in road-car transmission descriptions must not be treated as proof that a road-car component is a Formula 1 racing part. Likewise, a dual-clutch unit should not be equated with every paddle-shift automated manual.
Choose the correct service
Identify the assembly and record its markings, symptoms and existing diagnostic findings. Review the applicable rebuild scope and compatibility information. Claims that one manufacturer is always faster or more reliable do not provide a useful basis for repairing a particular vehicle.
